Sheriff’s Captain Michael Van Meter said the suspect allegedly wrapped a cellphone charging cable around the victim’s neck, forcing him to surrender approximately $1,500 in cash before fleeing the scene.
Responding deputies reviewed surveillance footage and interviewed witnesses, which led them to identify the suspect as 25-year-old Ayden Klompien of Belgrade. Officers later located Klompien on West Shore Drive and took him into custody.
Investigators also recovered a jacket matching the one seen in the casino video, which contained a syringe with methamphetamine residue, according to court documents. Klompien reportedly admitted to the robbery and is facing charges including robbery and criminal possession of a dangerous substance.
The victim survived the attack and did not suffer life-threatening injuries. Law enforcement officials are continuing the investigation.
Captain Van Meter urged the public to remain vigilant when handling significant amounts of cash in public spaces, particularly in locations such as casinos where large sums are common.
